Pocket Outdoor Media was formed in October 2017 to acquire the World Triathlon Corporation’s Media Division. Pocket’s founders have extensive history with these brands as owners, managers, customers, athletes, writers and editors. Pocket CEO Felix Magowan and partner Greg Thomas owned and managed Inside Communications (VeloNews, Inside Triathlon, Ski Racing, VeloPress, VeloGear, VeloBusiness) prior to its sale to Competitor Group, Inc. in 2008.
Magowan was a founding investor and board member at Pearl Izumi, Centurion Cycling, Skram Media (Climbing, Urban Climber and Mountain Gazette), and SpaceNews, the leading aerospace industry media brand. He was previously a board member at the International Mountain Bicycling Association, High Country News and Bicycle Colorado.
Thomas had over a decade’s experience in the digital arena at Apple Computer, Paul Allen’s Interval Research, and digital sports TV innovator Quokka Sports prior to joining Magowan at Inside Communications in 2003. Subsequently, Thomas ran digital operations at Competitor Group and was CEO at SpaceNews.
Joining Magowan and Thomas as Pocket’s third partner and Director of Corporate Development is Steve Maxwell, a long-time VeloNews contributor and co-editor of The Outer Line – a website/blog focused on the governance and economics of pro cycling. By trade, Maxwell owns and operates TechKNOWLEDGEy Strategic Group, a leading environmental industry transactional advisory firm.
All three partners are endurance sports athletes. Between them they have been bike racers in France, completed Ironman events, participated in ski racing, climbed Mount Ventoux from all four directions in a single day, and even won their age group at the Bolder Boulder.
The company is based in Boulder, Colorado and has an editorial and production office in San Diego, California.
